USTA creates sportsmanship award

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The USTA today announced the creation of the “US Open Sportsmanship Award” which will be presented to one male and one female professional tennis player who best demonstrates excellence in sportsmanship throughout the Emirates Airline US Open Series and the US Open. The award will be presented to each winner during the 2012 US Open.

“We believe that great sports make a sport great,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Jon Vegosen. “Professional athletes in our sport are viewed as role models by fans across the globe. The US Open is a great opportunity to recognize the positive impact these athletes can make in promoting excellence in sportsmanship through the game of tennis.”

Under Vegosen’s leadership, the USTA started a Sportsmanship Committee in 2011. Its charge is to “educate and inspire youngsters and their parents to develop and exhibit a high degree of sportsmanship and an attitude of fair play and mutual respect on and off the tennis court. Underlying the charge is the ethical imperative that fairness is more important than winning.” Todd Martin is the Honorary Chair, and USTA/Middle States Section President George Parnell, is the Chair of the USTA Sportsmanship Committee.

The US Open Sportsmanship Award winners will be selected by a committee made up of the following individuals:

  • Todd Martin, Chair USTA Board Member, former world No. 4 and two-time Grand Slam singles finalist, former Olympian, member of 1995 U.S. Davis Cup title-winning team, and winner of several sportsmanship awards, including two ATP Sportsmanship Awards
  • Mary Carillo, International sportscaster, former French Open mixed doubles champion, and President of USTA Serves
  • Matt Cronin, Tennis reporter and columnist
  • Mary Joe Fernandez, Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, former world No. 4, noted tennis television commentator, and U.S. Fed Cup Captain and 2012 U.S. Olympic Coach
  • Lars Rosene, Past President, USTA/Texas Section, and Vice Chairman of the USTA Sportsmanship Committee
  • Chanda Rubin, USTA Board Member, former world No. 6 and Australian Open semifinalist, former U.S. Fed Cup team member and Olympian, and winner of several sportsmanship awards, including Arthur Ashe Leadership Award and USTA Service Bowl Award
  • Jon Vegosen, Honorary Chair USTA Chairman of the Board and President

“The USTA believes strongly in the importance of good sportsmanship in making tennis more enjoyable for all,” said Todd Martin, Selection Committee Chairman. “Players, parents, and coaches alike all share responsibility in ensuring that good sportsmanship always is an integral part of competition—regardless of the level of play. When players adhere to the rules of fair play and parents and coaches encourage good sportsmanship by their own actions and examples, the sport benefits—and becomes more enjoyable and beneficial to all involved.”

Eligibility requirements for potential winners include participating in at least two Series tournaments, as well as the 2012 US Open. In addition to a handsome trophy, each US Open Sportsmanship Award winner will receive a $5,000 donation to the charity of his or her choice. The USTA will promote this new award at all Series tournaments and in advance of the 2012 US Open by creating a “Great Sport” brochure, along with in-stadium messaging for fans and tennis players.

Hie Electronics Announces the Launch of the TeraStack XL

McKinney, Texas (PRWEB) February 28, 2012

Quote startBy adding this storage capability to our system, we have increased the nearline data storage capacity of our product from 50 terabytes to 100 terabytesQuote end

Hie Electronics, a pioneer of innovation for long-term, scalable Active Archive™ and data storage solutions and the manufacturer of the TeraStack® Solution, announced today it has expanded the nearline data storage capabilities of its TeraStack Solution by launching the TeraStack® XL, which adds a 100 gigabyte optical Blu-ray disc option to its existing product line.

“We are very pleased to integrate the 100 gigabyte Blu-ray technology into our current product design with the launch of the TeraStack XL,” said Patrick Humm, Founder and President of Hie Electronics. “By adding this storage capability to our system, we have increased the nearline data storage capacity of our product from 50 terabytes to 100 terabytes.”

After rigorous internal testing, the TeraStack XL cartridges (each 12.5TB) will now be available with the TeraStack Solution. This upgrade increases the nearline capacity (8 cartridges) of the TeraStack Solution to 100 terabytes, doubling the previous nearline capacity. The backwards-compatibility of the TEAC burners allows it to be an easy upgrade even for existing customers.

“In order to address the growing data storage needs of our customers, we are pleased to launch the TeraStack XL,” said Howard Hodges, Vice President of Sales. “The addition of the 100 gigabyte Blu-ray disc option provides Hie customers with a full spectrum of storage options at a much lower total cost of ownership than our competitors.”

The TeraStack Solution uses its Active Archive™ architecture to move fixed content onto lower cost storage tiers. Blu-ray media is used to store the sleeping data, which eliminates the need for hard drives to constantly spin and consume energy. Blu-ray media is rated for 50 to 100 years of data integrity. This is a significant improvement over current hard drives and tape backup systems that need to be replaced every four to nine years and eventually end up as electronic landfill waste. In addition, the implementation of passive data storage reduces maintenance costs. It is ideally suited for businesses that push a large amount of data traffic through their IT infrastructure for computer data backup and recovery.

The TeraStack Solution can be used for medical industry applications as well as critical data backup, digital asset management, film and video archiving, forensic evidence data storage, geospatial imaging data archiving and storage and digital video surveillance storage.

Texas Tennis Open Announces reBounce as 2012 Tournament Sponsor

The 2012 Texas Tennis Open, which will feature many of the top Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) professional tennis stars, announced today that reBounces is an official sponsor of the Open and the tournament’s “10,000 Kids community program.” reBounces is the developer of the Green Tennis Machine™ — the first patented bulk re-pressurization system designed to re-pressurize tennis balls and keep them out of landfills.

“reBounces is a great company with a product that serves the tennis-playing community, while supporting recycling and landfill reduction efforts,” said Chris Giordano, Texas Tennis Open Tournament Director. “We are very proud to have reBounces as a sponsor of this year’s event and a primary participant in our community tennis program for kids.”

Since 2008, reBounces has been a leader in green tennis technology. The patented Green Machine is a bulk tennis ball re-pressurization system that allows tennis facilities to extend the life of their practice balls. The company has also announced that it will launch two smaller-sized Green Tennis Machines this spring. While the original machine was targeted at larger tennis facilities, the system has been “right-sized” for smaller facilities as well as individual coaches and teaching professionals. reBounces is also the first and only company in the United States to offer a free tennis ball recycling program for facilities and individuals.

More than 300 million tennis balls are produced worldwide each year, which translates into approximately 19,000 tons of non-biodegradable landfill waste. Through the use of their Green Tennis Machine and the national tennis ball recycling program, reBounces has helped their customers repurpose and reuse more nearly 2,000,000 tennis balls, since the company was founded.

“We look forward to showcasing all three sizes of our Green Tennis Machines at the 2012 Texas Tennis Open and supporting the recycling efforts of the event,” said reBounces Founder and CEO Bill Dirst. “Our goal is to educate tennis professionals and the tennis-playing community that there is an alternative to throwing away used tennis balls, which is ultimately a win for tennis players and the environment.”
